Five Ways to Save on Your Energy Bill
Jun 29, 2009 | 9:29 am
With temperatures in the upper 90’s this week, I know I want to turn down the AC. My husband and I have tried to find a happy medium, but lately, I like it a bit chillier. Of course, we know that nudging the thermometer up just 2 degrees can save money (SCE&G recommends 78 degrees and above). Here are 5 more ways to save.
1. Take Advantage of The Stimulus Package. Take advantage of the energy tax credits offered through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act when you make energy-efficient improvements to your home. The new law increases the credit rate to 30% of the cost of all qualifying improvements and raises the maximum credit limit to $1,500 for improvements made in 2009 and 2010. Definitely consult your accountant before taking the plunge. Read more...
2. Buy Energy Star. If you find yourself in a position of replacing windows or appliances, definitely buy an Energy Star product. Energy-efficient choices can save roughly 30% on your energy bill with similar savings of greenhouse gas emissions.
Pull down the blinds, which deflect the sun’s rays, during the day and keep your home naturally cooler. Curtains, shutters and mesh screens all do the job.
4. Look for Holes.
That is around doors and windows. I noticed the other day that our new windows don’t seal properly and our cool air flows right out to the squirrel habitat. Maybe that’s why they like our yard so much? Buy inexpensive caulk and weather stripping and save yourself a ton!
5. Plant Shade Trees.
Strategically placed trees can block the sun from heating up your house in the summer. Consult your favorite gardening center for recommendations.
