Oh, the New Year lurks right around the corner with all of its hope for reform. You vow to go on a fiscal and physical diet, you will play with your kids more, you will lighten up. But how? Broad "I'm gonna's" rarely stick.

One reader wrote in with a great idea that saves money and time, increases her exercise quotient and allows for more quality time with her children. What is the magic bullet? Yard work.

"I'm killing three New Year's Resolutions with one stone: Save Money, Get Exercise, and Make My Yard Look Good.....I'm doing the heavy shovel work, planting, raking, pine straw, mowing, pool cleaning, the whole bit myself.

It takes time, but as long as I'm not running something with a motor, the kids get outside time (LESS TV!!), and I get sweaty and sore muscles without looking at the clock thinking WHEN WILL THIS BE OVER?!?!? AND without paying a landscape company OR the gym. As a bonus, I get a better-looking yard that we can enjoy for a long time. I'm going to do something every day after work before it gets dark."

Molly's plan sounds good to me. I've been meaning to plant a garden for years now. I'm going to get over the fear of my brown thumb, and get working!
